Information for survivors who are feeling suicidal

We recognise that as a result of your experience of rape and/or sexual abuse you may feel overwhelmed with emotional pain and at times you may feel suicidal.

If you are feeling suicidal right now, please call for help! Call Samaritans 08457 90 90 90 or talk to someone you trust and let them know how you are feeling.

Its important you know that you are not alone.  Many of us have suicidal thoughts at some point in our lives.

Feeling suicidal is not a character defect, and it doesn’t mean that you are crazy, or weak, or flawed.  It only means that you have more pain than you can cope with right now.

The pain seems overwhelming at the moment, but with time and support, you can overcome these feelings and the pain and suicidal thoughts will pass.  Hope is out there and help is available to you.

Although it might seem as if your pain and unhappiness will never end, it is important to realize that a suicidal crisis is usually temporary.  Solutions are often found, feelings change, unexpected events occur.  Remember, suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.  Give yourself the time necessary for things to change and the pain to subside.

Reach out to someone.  Do it now. Use the time to tell someone what’s going on for you.  It doesn’t matter who it is, as long as it is someone you trust and who is likely to listen with compassion and acceptance.

If you do not feel the person you have chosen to talk to has understood, tell someone else, or call a suicide crisis helpline.  There are plenty of people out there who will understand.  Don’t let one bad experience stop you from finding someone who can help.

Ways to cope with suicidal feelings. Things to do.

  • Talk with someone everyday.  Bottling up feelings only creates more problems.
  • Make a safety plan.  Include numbers for your doctor, therapist, family members or friends who will help in an emergency.
  • Keep a regular routine as much as possible, even when your feelings seem out of control.
  • Get out into the fresh air or sunshine or to somewhere you enjoy for at least 30 minutes per day.
  • Make time for things that bring you joy.
  • Get active if possible.  Exercise is a good way of dealing with stress, as well as being good for your physical health
  • Be creative.  Drawing, painting, writing, playing an instrument, singing, acting or dancing can be good ways of expressing your feelings.
  • Meet other people.  Join a local group. You can find information about local groups from your local library.
  • Get help.  There is usually a counselling service in most towns and cities. If you do not think this type of service will suit you, you may be able to get information about other services which are available locally.  There are often helpful posters in GP surgeries and health centres, and phone books or the internet can be a useful source.

If you are feeling suicidal please don't hesitate to contact our helpline on (01382) 205556 at the times stated on the side of this page.
